Do they truly think
That a zombie is a rotten body?
That zombies moan and groan?
That our minds are deceased
And incapable of thoughts,
Of reasoning,
Of love?
I sat and watched the zombie movie re-run.
Why did humans think we behaved like this?
I glanced at my hands,
Pale and white,
But still human flesh,
Not rotted and green.
My limbs did not fall off when I moved,
And I was just like humans,
Only I was dead.
True, I did crave raw meat,
But not human flesh.
And now Halloween was coming back,
And people would mock zombies once more.
I clicked off the television,
Unable to stomach any more
Of Hollywood garbage
That these humans find funny.
I got up and moved to my window.
There was Jacob, as always.
He was as handsome as ever.
Oh, how I loved him,
Though he did not love me.
He must have caught my gaze,
For he came up to the door.
I smiled and opened it to him.
“Hello, Jacob.”
“Hey, Jess.”
He returned the smile.
My heart fluttered like a bird,
At least it would have
If my heart had been beating.
“Got any plans for Halloween?”
He asked with that same heart-melting smile.
I would have answered
Had I been capable of stringing together words
In a somewhat coherent manner
That would have sounded
Better than the high-pitched sigh I made.
“Would you like to come to a party?”
I was a frozen ice sculpture by that point.
Jacob was asking me to a party?
I eagerly nodded.
He smiled and said something about picking me up.
Than he vanished like a puff of smoke.
As I contemplated what to dress as,
My stomach began to rumble.
Of all the things that didn't die,
Why did my stomach have to be one of them?
I traversed to the kitchen and produced a slab of meat.
The putrid smell of day old beef,
Left out in the sun for far too long
Filled the air. I smiled.
As I sunk my teeth into the delicious hunk of meat,
I heard the door creek.
“I forgot to ask-”
Jacob began but stopped.
The blood from the beef made it look like I was blushing,
Which I would have if I was alive.
“It's not what you think!”
I tried to reason,
But his ears were closed.
He ran, screaming.
My life was over at that point.
